This work was originally the result of the efforts of several students of The Mahatma Letters who, through the experience of group and personal study of the book, realized the need for some kind of guide or manual to aid in understanding its varied contents. It became apparent that for a fuller appreciation of the background of the Letters, as well as of the Letters themselves, the serious student should have information concerning the persons, phenomena, events in the early history of the Theosophical Society, unfamiliar terms and names , and many other items referred to in the volume. This realization bore fruit, over a period of years, in the collection of the material which was presented in a form which, it was hoped, would be useful to other students.
The Guide is arranged in four major categories:
1. Chronology, 2. Study notes 3. Alphabetical Noes 4. Appendices
